How Our Functional Capacity Assessments Can Help You

  • Determine Support Needs for NDIS Plans: An FCA provides critical information that assists in securing or adjusting NDIS funding, ensuring that you receive the right level of care and support for your personal situation.

  • Assess Physical and Cognitive Abilities: The assessment covers physical, cognitive, and emotional capacities, helping to identify any limitations or areas where intervention is needed to support independence.

  • Develop Personalised Intervention Plans: Based on the results of the assessment, our Occupational Therapists will work with you to develop tailored strategies and recommend interventions that can help you achieve your goals.

  • Plan for Daily Living Needs: The assessment includes evaluating your ability to manage daily tasks such as self-care, mobility, household activities, and social engagement.

  • Track Progress Over Time: Functional Capacity Assessments can be used to track improvements or changes in your abilities over time, ensuring your NDIS plan continues to meet your needs.

What’s Involved in a Functional Capacity Assessment?

Our Functional Capacity Assessments are comprehensive and conducted in the comfort of your home, ensuring that we capture an accurate representation of your abilities in your daily environment. The assessment process typically includes:

  • Initial Consultation: We begin by discussing your goals, challenges, and any specific needs or concerns you may have. This helps us tailor the assessment to your unique situation.

  • Physical and Cognitive Evaluation: Our Occupational Therapists will assess your physical and cognitive abilities, looking at mobility, strength, coordination, problem-solving, memory, and other key areas that impact daily living.

  • Daily Living Skills Assessment: We evaluate how you manage essential daily tasks such as personal care, meal preparation, cleaning, shopping, and community participation.

  • Home Environment Assessment: We assess your home environment to ensure it supports your functional capacity. If needed, we provide recommendations for home modifications or adaptive equipment to improve safety and accessibility.

  • Comprehensive Report: After the assessment, we provide a detailed report with our findings and recommendations. This report can be submitted to the NDIS to help secure appropriate funding and support services.

Functional Capacity Assessments Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) and who needs one?

A Functional Capacity Assessment is a formal evaluation conducted by an occupational therapist to measure how a person's disability or health condition affects their ability to carry out daily tasks. It is commonly requested by the NDIS to support initial access applications, plan reviews, or funding decisions for supports like Supported Independent Living (SIL) or assistive technology.

  • What does an FCA assess?

An FCA looks at how a person functions across key life areas including self-care, mobility, communication, social participation, domestic tasks, and community access. The OT observes, interviews, and may use standardised tools to build an evidence-based picture of what the person can and cannot do independently — and what supports are reasonably necessary.

  • How is a Functional Capacity Assessment different from a standard OT assessment?

A standard OT assessment focuses on identifying goals and planning therapy. An FCA is specifically designed to produce a formal written report for the NDIS or other funding bodies, documenting functional limitations and their impact on daily life. FCAs carry a higher level of clinical rigour and are used as evidence in NDIS planning and review decisions.

  • Can an FCA support my NDIS plan review?

Yes. A current FCA is one of the strongest pieces of evidence you can provide at a plan review, particularly if your needs have changed or you are seeking increased funding. It gives the NDIA objective, clinician-verified information about your functional capacity rather than relying on self-reported needs alone.

  • How long does a Functional Capacity Assessment take?

Most FCAs involve an initial assessment session of one to two hours, followed by a written report. Total time from assessment to completed report varies depending on complexity, but typically ranges from two to four weeks. At Sigma Therapies, we aim to keep this process as straightforward as possible for families and participants across Perth.

  • Do I need a referral or a diagnosis to access an FCA?

You do not need a formal diagnosis to request an FCA. A referral from your GP, support coordinator, or NDIS planner is helpful but not always required. Contact our team directly and we can advise on the fastest pathway based on your current NDIS status.

  • Who pays for a Functional Capacity Assessment?

FCAs can be funded through your NDIS plan under Capacity Building — Improved Daily Living (CB Daily Activity). If you are not yet on the NDIS, FCAs may be funded privately or, in some cases, through a GP or specialist referral pathway.
